Here, the boy George Washington grew to manhood (from 1738-1752, ages 6-19) and here is the setting of the stories of the cherry tree and of the silver dollar (really a stone) thrown across the Rappahannock River. Massaponax Church was founded in 1788, and the church building was built in 1859. The original church was only the front portion of today's church building. During the Civil War, the church was used as a headquarters for both the Confederate and Union armies, a hospital for the wounded, and a stable. One unique characteristic of the church are the writings on the wall. During the Civil War, many soldiers wrote on the walls. Much was painted over during renovations, but some were preserved and are still visible today in the balcony of the church. These writings are a must-see for any Civil War enthusiast.

Just off Lee Drive (in the Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania National Military Park) and across the railroad tracks lies a 23-foot high granite pyramid. Though it is not officially recorded in history records, the park claims that the pyramid dates back to 1897. During that time, the Confederate Memorial Literary Society wanted to place markers along the railroad, marking Civil War sites. The railroad claimed that these markers would look too much like advertising. A better marker then was chosen, a 17-ton granite pyramid. Today the pyramid (officially known as Meade's Pyramid after General George Meade) is the only one of it's kind. Visitors to the Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania National Military Park can see the monument by driving to the end of Lee Drive (Prospect Hill).
