“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” – Albert Camus

The crisp mornings and chilly nights have finally started. Fall has arrived in the Fredericksburg Region! It’s time to break out the plush sweaters, spiced coffees, and get your Instagram grid ready for some serious foliage.

Here are a few can’t miss places to peep some awesome autumnal colors this season.

Photo: Widewater State Park

Widewater State Park – The views at Widewater are amazing simply by themselves. Add in the changing leaves and you have an absolute showstopper! If you trust your balance in a canoe, we think a photo taken from the water would be pretty special.

Chatham Manor – If you only had one day to enjoy the fall foliage, Chatham needs to be a high priority! The vista of downtown Fredericksburg in golden autumn light is amazing. It’s not all about that killer view, either. The historic manor and grounds are beautiful and almost have a magic quality about them. You have to see for yourself!

Photo: Lake Anna

Lake Anna Area – Promise us that you will set time in your calendar to enjoy a leisurely day sipping wine at Lake Anna Winery and gorging on fall views of the lake and trees at Lake Anna State Park. To really make a whole weekend out of it, go camping and snuggle around a bonfire.

Battlefield Drive – If you just need a quick fix and breath of crisp air, go for a run or walk on historic Battlefield drive. This is a favorite location for both new and experienced runners. Parking is available throughout Battlefield Drive as well as a trail head if you prefer something a little more off the beaten path. To find out more about this historic location or about Fredericksburg battlefields, check out our website here.

Mott’s Run Reservoir  Grab a canoe and explore! Mott’s Run Reservoir is located close to shopping in Central Park and makes the perfect Fall escape for someone who only has a few hours to play. Pro tip: Mott’s Run Reservoir has great fishing, too!

Slaughter Pen Farm – Check out the brilliantly colored leaves under a wide open blue sky! Slaughter Pen Farm is located right down Rt 2, in Spotsylvania County, very close to Shannon Airport and the Robin’s Nest Cafe. Enjoy a BLT and a milkshake after your hike and watch the planes take off and land!

Lake Mooney – Originally Rocky Pen Reservoir, Lake Mooney provides a beautiful backdrop to some spectacular fall foliage. If you enjoy fishing or boating, this would be a great place to drop a line and take in the crisp Autumn air.

Photo from Potomac Point Winery

Potomac Point Winery – Perfect date opportunity or girls day out! The winery is surrounded by mature trees making it the ideal spot to post up with wine, friends, and a picnic. While we have it listed here as a prime spot to go leaf peeping, it’s gorgeous at dusk too.

From the train station – Call us hopeless romantics, but if you’ve never pulled into the downtown Fredericksburg train station on a Fall day you are missing out! You get an unbeatable view of the Rappahannock River and the historic part of the city. For extra moody points, go on a slightly rainy day and grab a cuppa at one of our local coffee shops.

Rappahannock Heritage Trail – The Rappahannock River views from this trail are showstoppers year round. They are arguably their best though, in the fall. This trail offers a great backdrop for family photos or even sweet engagement pictures! Not in the market for anything formal? It’s perfect for a regular old selfie, too.
