Tucked away on River Rd. near Central Park, is the Motts Run Reservoir and Motts Run Recreation Area! The 160 acre reservoir actively supplies Fredericksburg City and Spotsylvania County with water and offers a wide array of activities like fishing, canoeing, hiking, and picnicking. Boats are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. You may bring your own boat, but please stick to electric motors only.
Summer Hours: Thursdays – Mondays, April 1 – October 31 from 7:00am – 7:00pm; the Reservoir is CLOSED on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (weather & water conditions permitting).

Motts Run remains lightly fished and is a great option for those looking for a scenic fishing oasis within the city. The reservoir is home to bluegill, large-mouth bass, crappie, channel catfish, northern pike, and white perch. You will need a fishing license to fish at Mott’s Run Reservoir. Daily or seasonal permits are required.

Fun fact: The current state record northern pike weighed 31 lbs. 4 oz. and came out of Motts Run Reservoir!

There’s more to Motts Run Recreation Area than just the reservoir. Within the 860- acre space is a 4.1 trail system perfect for biking and hiking and 4 miles of hiking only trail.

Be sure to visit the nature center before you start your hike, home to Pocket the resident pet snake! You can also see hands-on nature displays there, meet the park volunteers, and get lots of information. The Nature Center is free to the public during regular open hours and closed for the season November – March.
