400 Mount Hope Church Road, Stafford, Virginia 22554
Hwy Exit #

By January 1863, the Army of the Potomac was demoralized and defeated.  After losing the Battle of Fredericksburg in December and the Mud March, General Ambrose Burnside was replaced by General Joseph Hooker.  At that critical time the Union Army had more than 135,000 troops encamped for the winter in Stafford County.  This was the largest encampment of the Union soldiers anywhere during the scope of the Civil War.   The 41-acre Stafford Civil War Park tells the story of these winter encampments preserving well defined earthen artillery fortifications and hut sites.  Interpretive signs and maps help visitors understand the context and give voice to the landscape.  Park Hours are Nov 1 – March 30 from 8 am – 5 pm.  April – October 8 am – 8 pm.
