DESCRIPTION

To honor Black History Month the FXBG Rucking Group is hosting two events to honor people of color who played important roles in our local history.
John DeBaptiste lived in Fredericksburg in the period leading up to the American Revolution. He served aboard the Sloop of War “Dragon” in action along the Rappahannock and down into the Chesapeake Bay. Following the war he was a local business owner and raised his family in the area. His grandson George, who was raised up into his teenage years in Fredericksburg, became an important part of the Underground Railroad. He helped tens of thousands of slaves escape into Canada.
This ruck will discuss the connection between DeBaptiste and Fielding Lewis, brother in law of George Washington. It will visit the location of DeBaptiste’s business and will continue to his grave in Union Cemetery in Falmouth.
This ruck will be just about 5 miles long.
Please join us to celebrate this local hero.
